New Friends | Week 4 | A New Beginning

Feb 10, 2024

As we journey through our New Beginning series, we find ourselves in week four, just in time to embrace February with renewed hearts and minds. If you've missed our previous discussions, don't worry; there's plenty of inspiration ahead.

Each new year presents us with an opportunity for a reset—a chance to reflect on the past year's triumphs and challenges and make meaningful changes. It's a time to adjust our habits, routines, and perspectives. Perhaps you, like many of us, found yourself dissatisfied with last year's outcomes and are eager to chart a new course forward.

That's precisely what this series is all about—embracing the concept of A NEW BEGINNING. It's about hitting the reset button in areas of our lives that need a fresh start and realignment with the things of God. In the past weeks, we've delved into the importance of cultivating a new heart, renewing our minds through the Word, and deepening our connection with God through prayer.

Today, however, we're shifting our focus to another vital aspect of life—friendship. Now, before you dismiss the topic as trivial, consider this: friendships have a profound impact on our lives, shaping our values, beliefs, and even our destinies.

Think back to your earliest friendships—the ones that accompanied you through childhood and beyond. These connections leave an indelible mark, influencing the people we become and the paths we choose. Yet, friendships aren't just about shared experiences and laughter; they're about support, encouragement, and sometimes, tough love.

In the Bible, we see countless examples of God using friendships to shape and guide individuals. Take, for instance, the story of David and Jonathan—a friendship that defied societal expectations and personal ambitions. Despite their stark differences in status and upbringing, David and Jonathan forged a bond that transcended worldly norms.

Their friendship teaches us three valuable lessons:

  1. Real Friendships Overlook Differences: Despite being heirs to the throne and coming from vastly different backgrounds, David and Jonathan chose to see beyond their circumstances and embrace each other as equals. In a world divided by opinions and ideologies, their example challenges us to prioritize connection over division.
  2. Real Friendships Look Out for One Another: Jonathan's loyalty to David, even in the face of his father's jealousy and rage, exemplifies the selflessness of true friendship. He placed David's well-being above his own interests, reminding us that genuine friendships require sacrifice and unwavering support.
  3. Real Friendships Look to Carry On the Blessing: David's kindness towards Mephibosheth, Jonathan's son, serves as a poignant reminder of the ripple effect of friendship. Despite Mephibosheth's physical limitations, David extended a hand of generosity and inclusion, passing on the blessing of friendship to the next generation.

In a world craving connection and belonging, let us heed the timeless wisdom of Scripture and cultivate friendships that reflect the love and grace of our Heavenly Father. Let us be the kind of friends who uplift, support, and inspire one another, regardless of our differences or circumstances.

As we navigate this journey of life, may we cherish the gift of friendship and strive to be a source of strength and encouragement to those around us. For in the tapestry of our lives, it is our friendships that add color, depth, and richness to the story.

So, as we continue our quest for new beginnings, let us not underestimate the power of friendship to shape our destiny and leave a lasting legacy of love and camaraderie. Together, let us embrace the adventure of life, knowing that with friends by our side, we can conquer any challenge and celebrate every triumph.

Here's to new beginnings and lasting friendships—may they light our path and enrich our souls for years to come.

In a world seemingly divided by the term "woke" and the complexities it brings, it's easy to forget that the concept isn't new. Yes, you heard it right. Long before hashtags and debates, Jesus was already leading the charge in awakening consciousness.
